Benetton have re-signed Tomás Albornoz on a new contract. The new deal will see the Argentine fly half remaining at the Italian side until 2024. The fly half arrived in Northern Italy in 2021 from Tucumán, Argentina.
Albornoz joined Benetton after having played for Los Jaguares in Super Rugby and Los Jaguares XV in the Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR). Having impressed, Albornoz is now locked-in to a long-term contract that will go for a full season after RWC 2023.
Benetton is home to Pumas props Thomas Gallo and Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro. It is also home to former Pumas hooker Tomás Baravalle, and uncapped Argentine center Joaquín Riera. In addition, Italy has capped Argentine prop Ivan Nemer, and center Juan Ignacio Brex.
The 24-year-old Albornoz is uncapped. He was on Argentina’s roster for the 2020 Tri Nations in Australia. With Nicolás Sánchez and Benjamín Urdapilleta both well into their 30’s, there is room for an uncapped player to force his way into consideration under new Pumas coach, Michael Cheika.
