Uruguay have secured a two-match home series against Romania in July 2022. The mid-year series will the second of a two-part international program for Los Teros in mid 2022. First, the South Americans will tour Japan in June.
Romania and Uruguay have played each other in ten rugby test matches. The first was not very long ago, taking place in in 2008. Romania have eight wins, Uruguay one, with one draw in 2010. Uruguay won 27-20 in November 2018. Romania won last November’s match at the neutral location of Verona, Italy.
Both of Uruguay’s home July test matches will be against Romania and both will be at the Estadio Charrúa in Montevideo. Dates for the fixtures are July 10 and July 17. The series will serve Uruguay greatly as preparation continues for RWC 2023. Los Teros qualified for the tournament as Americas 1, doing so after defeating Brazil, Chile and the USA.
Romania is yet to qualify for RWC 2023. The Oaks are scheduled to compete in repechage against three others. One of them will be Americas 3 (Chile or the USA). However, Spain’s qualification for the World Cup is presently being investigated for potentially having breached player eligibility laws.
The Uruguay vs Romania series will serve both teams greatly. Before then, however, Uruguay will tour Japan in June. Game one will take place on Saturday, June 18 at Chichibunomiya Rugby Stadium (Prince Chichibu Memorial Rugby Ground) in Tokyo. The historic venue has been host to many Japanese home test matches in the past. Uruguay’s neighbors, Argentina played against Japan at the venue in 2016.
The second test match will take place on Saturday, June 25. It will be played at Kitakyushu’s Mikuni World Stadium, on Japan’s southern island of Kyushu. The venue has been used for the Women’s Rugby Sevens Series.
Los Teros will return to play home matches following the two matches. Japan will subsequently play host to France in an additional two match series. The Japan vs France matches will be played in Toyota and Tokyo on Saturday, July 02 and Saturday, July 09.
One match that will not be going ahead is Uruguay vs Scotland. The Northern British test team will play three test matches in northern Argentina in July. A match against Chile is presently being finalized for late June. Scotland will no play vs Uruguay. This follows Wales’ canceled tour to South America in July 2021. Uruguay had been scheduled to host the Welsh.
Los Teros will field a team based on players from the Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR). Peñarol were beaten finalists in the 2021 final. SLAR 2021 served Uruguay well to prepare for the RWC 2023 qualifiers. Players based in Europe will be involved in the matches against Romania.
