Ben Foden will not be making a return to Major League Rugby. The former England international announced his retirement from professional rugby effective immediately. A statement posted on social media reads, in part:
“So after lots of deliberation I’ve decided to finally hang up my playing boots from professional rugby. From a young ‘Pop Idol’ starting at Sale Sharks to 10 years at Northampton Saints to finally finishing my career with Rugby United New York it’s been a 18 year career filled with every emotion possible.
“Rugby has given me so much through my life time and given me enough memories to keep me smiling for the rest of my days. It’s taken me all over the world and I feel privileged to say it’s given me friendships and a family I can always depend on.
“Excited for the next chapter in my life and what’s around the corner.”
Foden, 36, had previously indicated his intention to retire following the 2021 MLR campaign, but after joining the cast of ‘Dancing on Ice‘ earlier this year did not make any formal statement. The radio silence led to speculation that a late-season return with Rugby New York might be possible.
Across three seasons in New York, Foden played 35 games, all but one of them starts, and scored six tries. His first three appearance for the club were at outside center but he then returned to his preferred fullback position for the remainder of MLR career.
