Los Teros to be based in Avignon at RWC 2023

It has been confirmed that Los Teros will be based in Avignon at Rugby World Cup 2023. The Americas 1 qualifier will be based in the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur region.

Uruguay will not play matches in Avignon. The city is relatively cose to two of the three venues that Los Teros will play their RWC 2023 matches – Nice and Lyon. It is far from Lille where Uruguay are to open their RWC 2023 campaign against France.

Uruguay’s four pool matches will be played across three French cities. Los Pumas will open against the tournament hosts, France on Thursday, September 09, 2023. The match will be France’s second of the tournament and Uruguay’s first. It will be played at the Stade Pierre Mauroy in Lille in France’s far north just 10km from the border with Belgium.

Los Teros’ fixture list sees matches against RWC 2019 Quarter Finalists in the first and fourth fixtures. Fixture two will be against Italy at the Stade de Nice in Nice on Wednesday, September 20. From there Uruguay will play at OL Stadium in Lyon against the Africa 1 qualifier on September 27 and New Zealand on October 05.

The fixture list is highly challenging. The dates are friendlier than what Uruguay had at past Rugby World Cups, but there are matches against three Tier one sides and two of them are in the world’s Top 3.

Uruguay has never faced either France or New Zealand previously. Los Teros faced Italy last November, losing 17-10 in Parma. Prior test matches were played between Italy and Uruguay in 1999, 2001 and 2007.

Namibia is the most likely country to qualify for RWC 2023 as Africa 1. Uruguay and Namibia traded wins during the past RWC cycle. Namibia won a thriller 30-28 in Montevideo in 2019. Prior to that Uruguay won a test series 2-0 in Namibia in 2017. Los Teros completed a 52-26 and a 39-34 victory to make history in Africa.
