USA Rugby has is officially in the race to host not one, but two Rugby World Cups. Having already been confirmed as an exclusive dialogue partner with World Rugby for the men’s event in 2031, the USA RWC Bid Committee is now in discussion to host the women’s event in 2033.
World Rugby officials including CEO Alan Gilpin met with the USA Committee in Denver last week. A result of the discussions saw the hosting model moving away from potentially competing for the 2029 women’s event. England have been granted preferred status for the 2025 tournament and Australia 2027, while 2029 had remained up for grabs.
Government support was also a topic of discussion. A bipartisan Congressional Resolution was introduced earlier this month that encouraged President Joe Biden to support the bid and offered full consideration of any legislative proposals regarding the potential of hosting a Rugby World Cup.
A statement included in the media release says that USA Rugby and World Rugby are in the process of developing a long-term growth strategy to “organize and align goals across the youth, collegiate, senior club, and professional level.” The formal awarding of RWC 2031 hosting rights is expected in May. No date has yet been publicly set for the 2033 event.
The USA has never before hosted a 15-a-side Rugby World Cup. San Francisco was the host city for the 2018 Rugby World Cup Sevens. Canada hosted the 2006 Women’s World Cup in Edmonton.
