Selknam bounced back from their opening round defeat against the Olímpia Lions to strike gold against Os Cobras. The Chilean side were 46-10 winners over the visitors from Brazil; a result that moves Selknam up to third position in SLAR 2022 and leaves Os Cobras as the basement side thus far.
Os Cobras were soundly beaten; yet, Selknam did not have to play as well as the scoreline suggests they did. Indeed, there were four yellow cards handed out to Os Cobras. Playing half of a professional rugby match with 14 players is very challenging.
Before the cards began, Selknam had already established a lead. Hooker Tomás Dussaillant went over for close range to open the scoring in the second minute of play. Captain for the day, Francisco Urroz converted his first of six goals of the night.
Os Cobras responded with their first points. Fly half Lucas Tranquez landed an 11th minute penalty. However, Selknam would score four further tries before Os Cobras added to their early penalty. No8 Alfonso Escobar, Rodrigo Fernández and Dussaillant all touched down as Juan Zuccarino. In scoring, Zuccarino became the first Uruguayan to score SLAR points for Selknam.
The teams traded tries in the final quarter to complete a match in which Selknam’s players gained valuable time together for the big picture of preparing for the RWC 2023 qualifiers against the USA in July.
Selknam with have the toughest opponent next round when they play host to Los Jaguares XV on Friday in Santiago. Os Cobras travel to Paraguay to prepare for Los Cafeteros Pro next Saturday.
