Peñarol overcame a spirited Cobras effort to open the 2022 Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR) season. The Uruguayan side completed a 19-10 win, doing so with the teams only able to score three points each during the second half.
The match started very well for Os Cobras. The Brazilian side ran-in a try in the opening minute of play. Daniel Sancery latched on to a loose ball and was able to score with ease. The score was one of just three tries during the match but it came from one of very many handling errors.
Peñarol responded through the boot of Federico Favaro. He had a solid match in general despite him kicking 3/5, a lower than normal success rate for the right winger. Favaro missed the conversion but Peñarol were in the lead and would remain so until the game’s end.
Try number two for Peñarol rounded out the three tries of the contest. Juan Echeverría scored a prop’s favorite. His pick-and-go from close range had Peñarol nine points ahead. The willingness to score more points was there but ball-control was rusty.
The team’s traded penalties in the second half through Favaro and Tranquez. It meant no bonus point for Os Cobras. Peñarol now turn their attention to Los Cafeteros Pro, whom they face next Saturday. Os Cobras will take on Selknam in round two, also on Saturday.
