Cafeteros Pro surpass expectations against Jaguares XV

Los Cafeteros Pro surpassed expectations in their first match of the 2022 Súper Liga Americana de Rugby. The Colombian side scored a bonus point in a 33-22 defeat against the 2021 champions Los Jaguares XV.

Los Jaguares XV got the bonus point win, but the team did not play with the same flair nor aggression that was a constant during SLAR 2021.

Early play was explosive; there were strong carries from both teams. The Argentine side gained the lead through a line-out to maul tactic. Debutant Andrea Panzarini scored the first of what would be two tries for the hooker.

The early score was responded to quickly. Los Cafeteros prop Javier Corvalán barged over to score in the left corner. It seemed that the match would be a genuine contest and not a match wherein Los Jaguares XV ran up a big score.

This was furthered throughout the remainder of the opening half. Gerónimo Prisciantelli scored as did man-of-the-match Santiago Mare. Panzarini continued his solid debut and the Argentine side went into the interval holding a 26-5 lead.

Mare scored again in the second half. He converted his own try to put Los Jaguares XV 33-5 ahead. The remaining points of the match all went the way of the Colombian side.

Three late tries gave Los Cafeteros Pro four for the match. With it the final score was 33-22. The Colombian side’s tries demonstrated some impressive rugby. Boris Wenger, Eliseo Morales and Diver Ceballos all scored. Ceballos’ try was arguably the best of them. It involved a good run and break from Julián Hernández.

Both teams will play again on Saturday. Los Cafeteros Pro take on Peñarol while Los Jaguares XV will be up against the Olímpia Lions.
