Uruguay will play two test matches against Japan in 2022. The matches will be in Japan but will fall outside of the player release windows of July and November. As such, Los Teros will take a Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR) team to the Asian countries for the two test matches in June.
The tour was confirmed by the URU in an interview with Ignacio Chans. Match dates for the tour are yet to be finalized. They will, however, be in late June. Japan will subsequently play host to France for test matches while Los Teros will play home matches against yet to be confirmed teams in July.
Uruguay’s opposition will not be Scotland. This is so despite Argentina hosting Scotland for three test matches in July and Chile presently being in the final stages of confirming a mid-week test match that will take place prior to the Matches between Los Pumas and Scotland.
Los Teros are likely to play at home against the teams that qualify for RWC 2023 as Europe 1 and Europe 2. At present this means two of Georgia, Romania, Portugal and Spain are Uruguay’s likely opposition in July. There will not be a Tier 1 opponent in June or July but plans are for Uruguay to play against a Tier 1 side in Europe in November. This will be in addition to matches against Tier 2 opposition.
The tour to Japan will be Uruguay’s first since 2015. Los Teros played two warm-up matches against the Asian powerhouse en route to Europe for the World Cup. Japan went on to beat South Africa the following month in Brighton, England.
