Mario Ledesma has stepped down as Argentina’s Head Coach. The 48-year-old was in charge of Los Pumas from August 01, 2018 until today. Los Pumas had a long 2021; the year included twelve test matches, none of which were in Argentina.
Argentina’s final test match under Ledesma was a record defeat against Ireland in Dublin. Ledesma was questioned by Argentine media following the result about his future. He was unhappy with the questions and later appologied for how he responded to them.
The test match in Dublin was his 33rd in charge of Los Pumas. His results were 8 wins, three draws and 22 defeats. It marked a win record of 29%. Ledesma had coached Argentina to a historic win over New Zealand one year before the dark day in Dublin.
Under Ledesma, Los Pumas won two and lost two at RWC 2019. The results saw the South Americans elimiated at the group stage. His wins at the tournament were against Tonga in Osaka and the USA in Kumagaya.
Ledesma’s contract with the UAR concluded on December 31, 2021. He was, however, assured of maintaining his post based on having two wins vs Tier 1 opposition in 2021. The wins were against Wales in Cardiff and against Italy in Treviso. Argentina’s other win in 2021 was against Romania in Bucharest.
Argentina have a tough 2022 and 2023 ahead. Focus is on finding the winning formula to gain confidence for RWC 2023 in France. Los Pumas will play in Pool D against England, Japan, Samoa, and Americas 2.
