Australia ends USA win streak and claims Seville title

Australia came away champions in the women’s bracket at the Seville Sevens after defeating the USA and Ireland on the last day of the World Series event. The Semi Final defeat ended an 11-game win streak for the Eagles that dated back to the second tournament in Dubai.

A late try from Naya Tapper nearly forced extra time in the USA’s first match of the day, but the conversion drifted wide leaving the Australians to celebrate a 21-19 win. Two early tries from Kris Thomas gave the Eagles the lead over England at halftime of the Bronze Final, but they faded in the second half to settle for 4th place.

Canada would close their tournament in 7th spot. After being shut out against France, they would outscore Spain three tries to one to end a challenging weekend on a positive note.

Brazil would also leave on a winning effort after defeating Poland in the 9th place play-off. They had earlier routed Portugal with Bianca Silva scoring two tries and Raquel Kochhann adding six conversions.

With four of six tournaments now played on the 2022 circuit Australia have a healthy lead over France in top spot, with the USA sitting in 4th place but just two points behind Russia and four behind France. Canada are two points behind England in 8th spot, with Brazil three points being Spain in 10th.

There will now be a long hiatus as the next women’s event is not scheduled until April 30 in Langford, BC. The final event will take place in Toulouse beginning on May 20.
