San Diego signs Canada scrumhalf Jason Higgins

The San Diego Legion have signed scrumhalf Jason Higgins for the 2022 Major League Rugby season. Originally from Cork, Ireland, Higgins spent the 2021 season with the Toronto Arrows and won five caps for Canada during the fall international campaign.

Visa complications prevented Higgins from joining New York in 2020, and delayed his MLR debut to this past season. He was primarily used in a supporting role for first choice scrumhalf Ross Braude, making 13 appearances with three starts.

Higgins gives the Legion two international scrumhalves in combination with US Eagles veteran Nate Augspurger. San Diego State graduate Nico Gilli played the entirety of Friday’s preseason match against Austin but the club have yet to formally announce his signature.

Two others confirmed for the 2022 season are front row pair Dillon Shotwell and Chris Baumann. Shotwell, a hooker and USA u20 cap, was selected by Houston in the 2021 Collegiate Draft but was not signed, while former Eagles tighthead prop Chris Baumann returns for a second campaign.
