Houston reinforces front row with prop trio

The Houston SaberCats have moved to shore up their front row resources with the addition of three props ahead of the fast-approaching 2022 Major League Rugby season. Aaron Mitchell arrives from the San Diego Legion, Frikkie de Beer from the LA Giltinis, and Pono Davis via the American Raptors.

Mitchell is a tighthead specialist who has been with the Legion since 2018. The 25-year-old made 9 appearances including 4 starts this past year and now has 32 MLR caps on his resume. He could jump straight into a starting role pending the arrival of Juan Pablo Zeiss, who is awaiting visa clearance to travel from Argentina.

de Beer, 30, made 7 appearances for LA last season, all as a replacement. He was previously on the Utah Warriors roster for the 2019 and 2020 seasons. The South African is more often found on the loosehead side but also covers tighthead.

Davis can cover loosehead, but is more likely to play on the tighthead side. Weighing in at 295lbs (135kg), he is a former defensive lineman for the Southern Methodist University Mustangs football team. The 24-year-old Hawaiian is the youngest of the trio and joins from the American Raptors.
