USA clinch Pool B in Málaga Women’s draw

The USA Women’s Eagles clinched first place in Pool B after a perfect opening day at the Málaga Sevens. Two wins from two was enough, with Fiji’s withdrawal due to the pandemic leaving them with a bye in the final round of the pool stage.

North American rivals Canada were up first, with the USA running up a 22-nil score before conceding a late try in a dominant win. Canada would not play a second game on Day One with Fiji their scheduled opponent. They will play Poland in their final pool match.

Poland managed to score once in the middle of the USA’s second match, but Cheta Emba’s double paved the way for another high score. The Eagles now face the top 3rd-place team in the Quarter Finals.

Brazil suffered defeats in each of their Pool C matches, though they competed well against Russia with Andressa Alves scoring early and Gabriela Lima late. France were too strong for As Yaras, with Lima’s try wiped clean by a Joanna Grisez hat trick.

Australia finished at the top of Pool A with two wins from two, while both Russia and France were unbeaten in Pool C. A complete schedule for Day Two can be seen here.
