New York signs former Leicester flanker Brendon O’Connor

Rugby New York have signed openside flanker Brendon O’Connor for the 2022 Major League Rugby season. The announcement comes on the same day of LA’s confirmation that USA Eagles flanker Hanco Germishuys has been acquired from New York in a trade.

O’Connor represented New Zealand at the 2009 Junior World Championship and brings experience in both Super Rugby and the English Premiership. The 32-year-old was a first choice player for the Blues in 2019 before spending four seasons with Leicester Tigers. In 2021 he suited up for the Crusaders. Most recently O’Connor has been playing for Hawke’s Bay in the Bunnings NPC.

With US-eligible and Australian-raised Joe Basser also joining up, New York now has four loose forwards confirmed including returnees Benjamín Bonasso and Kara Pryor. Collegiate Draft pick Peter Reyes was initially selected as a prop but played in the back row for White Plains this past fall.
