Rugby ATL confirms return of scrumhalf Ryan Rees

Rugby ATL have retained the services of scrumhalf Ryan Rees for the 2022 Major League Rugby season. The 24-year-old enjoyed a strong first season with the club that led to selection in the USA squad for their overseas tour in July, though he did not ultimately see game time for the Eagles.

Rees was one of four scrumhalves on the Ratlers roster in 2021 and he would compete with Rowan Gouws for the first choice role, with the latter getting the nod in the Championship Final. In 14 appearances Rees made six starts and pulled ahead of Duncan van Schalkwyk in the pecking order.

van Schalkwyk and Eamonn Matthews have both represented the USA at u20 level and will be looking to put pressure on Rees in what is a highly competitive position for ATL. Gouws has already been confirmed as returning for the second year of his contract.
