Houston signs South African winger Gerrie Labuschagne

The Houston SaberCats have announced the signing of winger Gerrie Labuschagne for the 2022 Major League Rugby season. Hailing from South Africa, the 26-year-old recently returned to action with the Pumas in the Currie Cup after a one-year injury hiatus that initially prompted a retirement call.

Labuschagne made his senior provincial debut with the Free State at the age of 19, with his Currie Cup bow coming two years later with the Pumas. He then signed for Yamaha Júbilo in 2018 and spent two seasons in the Japan Top League before bowing out in October of last year.

Tall for an outside back at 6’4″ (1.94m), Labuschagne is most often found on the wing but can also play fullback. He is noted for his ability to kick long-range penalty goals.
