San Diego signs Cheetahs prop Hencus van Wyk

The San Diego Legion have signed South African prop Hencus van Wyk for the 2022 Major League Rugby season. He had initially signed for the 2020 campaign but did not ultimately join the team in 2021, instead playing for NTT Docomo in Japan and subsequently with the Cheetahs in the Currie Cup.

van Wyk’s professional career began with the Blue Bulls and he made his Super Rugby debut in 2013. In 2016 he signed for Sanix Blues of the Top League before playing for the Lions the following year. The 29-year-old also spent two seasons playing with the Sunwolves.

A tighthead specialist, van Wyk follows incoming lock Ben Grant as a confirmed arrival. Returning forwards confirmed to date include loosehead prop Nathan Sylvia, hooker Peter Malcolm, and flankers Chris Robshaw and Michael Smith. They will be joined by hooker Thomas Capriotti and second row Jonah Dietenberger who were selected in the Collegiate Draft.
