Houston signs South African center Louritz van der Schyff

The Houston SaberCats have signed midfielder Louritz van der Schyff for the 2022 Major League Rugby season. He is the seventh South African player to sign for the re-building Texan side during the off-season, joining new Director of Rugby Heyneke Meyer and Head Coach Pote Human at AVEVA Stadium.

van der Schyff was highly rated as an age-grade player, captaining his country at the u18 level in 2016. Knee injuries slowed his progress and though he joined the Lions in 2019, it wasn’t until June of this year that van der Schyff made his senior Currie Cup debut at the age of 23 with the Blue Bulls. He also played for the University of Pretoria in the Varsity Cup.

Standing 6’2″ (1.89m) and tipping the scales at 225lbs (103kg), van der Schyff is a physical presence at the inside center position and models his game on that of mentor and former Springbok captain Jean de Villiers. He joins a SaberCats backline that also welcomes Eagles sevens representatives Christian Dyer, Matai Leuta, and Maka Unufe to its ranks in 2022.
