Houston signs Maka Unufe, re-sign front row trio

The Houston SaberCats have announced the signing of World Sevens Series star Maka Unufe for the 2022 Major League Rugby season. Additionally they have re-signed loosehead prop pair Nicolás Solveyra and Valdemar Lee-Lo, and hooker Diego Fortuny.

This will be the first MLR campaign for Unufe. The 30-year-old made his Eagles debut in at the 2011 Pan-Am Games and played in 43 World Series events. He was also on the USA teams at the 2013 and 2018 Sevens World Cups, and the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

Unufe follows sevens team members Danny Barrett, Matai Leuta, and Christian Dyer to Houston. Like both Dyer and Leuta, he could be an option at center or wing for the SaberCats.

Lee-Lo, Solveyra, and Fortuny each return for a third season at AVEVA Stadium. Injury limited 26-year-old Lee-Lo to just 3 games in 2021. Solveyra, also 26, played in 13 games while Fortuny, 30, made 8 appearances after missing several weeks with a broken thumb.
