Seawolves sign Tasman Mako prop Sam Matenga

The Seattle Seawolves have signed tighthead prop Sam Matenga on a three-year deal that runs through the 2024 Major League Rugby season. Arriving from New Zealand provincial side Tasman, he joins the returning Tim Metcher as primary options on the right side of the scrum for the 2022 campaign.

Matenga, 23, joined the Mako’s development side in 2019 and made his senior debut later that year. In 2020 he was promoted to a full-time contract and this past year took over the starting role in the No3 shirt. The Mako won the 2020 National Provincial Championship and were runners-up to Waikato in 2021, with Matenga starting in both finals.

It will not be the first trip to Seattle for Matenga. He notably started against the Seawolves in the exhibition match at Starfire Stadium in January 2020, and scored a try against the SaberCats in Houston the week before. Tasman teammate Isaac Salmon recently signed for the Toronto Arrows.
