New York signs former Sunwolves utility back Jason Emery

Rugby New York have announced the signing of 28-year-old utility back Jason Emery for the 2022 Major League Rugby season. The New Zealander arrives via Japan where he has most recently been playing for the Sanix Blues, having previously spent two years with the Sunwolves.

Emery was an age-grade star for New Zealand, starting at outside center in both the 2012 and 2013 Junior World Championships. He made his senior provincial debut for Manawatu at the age of just 18 and started 7 Super Rugby games for the Highlanders before his 20th birthday.

Additional representative honors came for Emery with selection to the New Zealand Māori squads in 2014 and 2015.  A ruptured Achilles tendon saw him miss out on the 2017 Super Rugby season and he then moved to Japan in 2018, signing for Sanix and the Sunwolves.

Initially considered a specialist midfielder, in recent years Emery has shown his versatility with starts at flyhalf and fullback. He joins a New York backline that includes returnees Fa’asiu Fuatai, Quinn Ngawati, Apenisa Cakaubalavu, and Troy Lockyear with Canadian international Andrew Coe a new arrival.
