San Diego signs towering Australian lock Ben Grant

San Diego have announced the signing of Australian lock Ben Grant for the 2022 Major League Rugby season. The 23-year-old joins from the Queensland Reds development squad. At 6’9″ (2.05m) he will be the tallest player currently in MLR and among the tallest in league history with former Houston lock Justin Allen holding that title at 6’10” (2.08m).

Grant is originally from Queensland but joined the Western Force on a development contract in 2017. He would play locally with the Cottesloe club and professionally for the Perth Spirit in the National Rugby Championship. A spot with the senior Force squad then followed in both the NRC and Global Rapid Rugby.

With Siaosi Mahoni and Keni Nasoqeqe both departing for Houston, the Legion will look to Grant and USA Selects representative Ben Mitchell to secure lineout possession. Lindenwood lock Jonah Dietenberger was selected in the Collegiate Draft. It remains to be seen if late-season addition Tom Franklin returns.
