The USA Women’s Eagles finished in 5th spot in the second of two Dubai tournaments to start the new World Sevens Series season. Canada would close in 8th spot, with Brazil slipping to 9th but capping their day with a first ever victory over Great Britain.
Mixed results in the pool stage left the USA to fight for 5th spot, a result they sealed by the narrowest of margins. Alena Olsen’s conversion of Naya Tapper’s try just two minutes into the game enough to beat Spain 7-5.
Canada would finish the tournament with one win from five games, their only victory coming against Brazil in the pool stage. A 52-nil drubbing at the hands of Australia opened their account on Day One. They would come within two points against both of Spain and Russia but ultimately could not come away with the results they wanted.
Brazil could not match their efforts of a week ago but remained competitive with a 35-7 loss to Australia their only one-sided defeat. After dropping all four pool matches they would upset Great Britain 26-24 in their final match. Thalia Costa scored a double with late tries from Bianca Silva and Gabriela Lima, converted by Raquel Kochhann, securing another historic first.
Australia ultimately proved a class apart with a 15-5 win over Fiji in the Cup Final to secure back-to-back wins in Dubai. France were third best, cruising to a 28-5 win over Russia in the Bronze Final. The series now goes on hiatus until the end of January when Spain host tournaments in Malaga and Seville.
