NOLA Gold signs Harley Wheeler from Eagles Sevens

Harley Wheeler won’t be returning to Rugby ATL after all. The 24-year-old winger has signed on with the NOLA Gold for the 2022 Major League Rugby season. He makes the return to the XV-a-side game having spent the past year training with the Eagles Sevens side.

The 2019 recipient of the Rudy Scholz award as the USA’s top collegiate rugby player, Wheeler played four games for ATL during their shortened 2020 MLR season. He opted to take a one-season hiatus from his contract to pursue Olympic honors, having previously made his World Sevens Series debut at Cape Town in December 2019.

Ultimately the Life University product did not make the final squad for Tokyo and he will now pursue a spot on the Eagles roster for Rugby World Cup 2023. Wheeler was due to return to ATL but has instead fills a gap on NOLA’s roster left by the departure of Julián Domínguez to Austin.
