Rugby New York have confirmed new contracts for five returning players. Back rowers Benjamín Bonasso and Kara Pryor, and backs trio Fa’asiu Fuatai, Quinn Ngawati, and Apenisa Cakaubalavu have all re-committed for a second Major League Rugby season in 2022.
Bonasso represented Argentina at age-grade level but made his Eagles debut in 2021, winning caps against Uruguay and New Zealand. The 24-year-old played all 17 games for New York this past season including a dozen starts on the flank.
Pryor, 30, settled in at No8 for the side though the New Zealander was initially signed as a flanker. He played in 14 games though his contributions ended a week early after being sent off against NOLA in the final game of the regular season.
Fuatai also hails from New Zealand where he was primarily a winger, but he controlled the No13 shirt for New York. The 28-year-old featured in 15 games with 2 tries scored and several others created.
Cakaubalavu played 13 games on the left wing after arriving from the Fiji Sevens squad. He scored 6 tries during that time with the 28-year-old second only to club captain and hooker Dylan Fawsitt’s tally of 9.
Ngawati, like Bonasso, also made his test bow in 2021, winning 4 caps for Canada at his preferred spot of inside center. 14 of the 22-year-old’s 15 games played for New York were starts with 6 in the midfield and 8 on the wing. He is set to be joined by fellow Canadian Andrew Coe in the Big Apple.
