Uruguay and Chile have qualified for the 2022 Rugby Sevens World Cup. The two South Americans won the Semi Finals of the South American Men’s Sevens earlier today in San José, Costa Rica. In doing so both secured their places in the 2022 World Cup in Cape Town, South Africa.
Uruguay and Chile were two of nine Latin American countries that competed at the Estadio Nacional de San José for the regional title and for the two places at the Rugby World Cup Sevens. The seven other participants were Brazil, Peru, Guatemala, Panama, El Salvador, Nicaragua and the host country.
Played over two days, the tournament saw teams divided into three pools and subsequent matches. Each team finished in an official position. Brazil were third and Peru fourth. Brazil had a bittersweet campaign. On the one hand the team produced some highly impressive results including beating Panama 71-0 and Guatemala 80-0. On the other hand, Brazil went from a strong position to losing their Semi Final against Chile.
Chile’s win caps off a record-setting weekend for Chilean rugby. The national men’s test team, Los Cóndores completed a comfortable away win over Russia on Friday. It gave Chile a test series win over the RWC 2011 and 2019 competitors. The Rugby Sevens outcome sees Chile confirmed for the Rugby Sevens World Cup. They join Argentina and the USA as the Americas’ competitors for now.
Uruguay were comfortable winners over Peru in the Semi Final and Chile in the Final. The win caps off a ground-breaking year for Uruguay. Los Teros won the Americas 1 qualifiers against the USA. It saw Uruguay book their spot at RWC 2023. Never never had Uruguay qualified before a North American country.
