Brazil Women earn historic Sevens Series results

Brazil celebrated an historic weekend in Dubai with their highest-ever finish in a World Sevens Series event. As Yaras earned a 6th-place finish, defeating the Women’s Eagles in pool play and falling short to Great Britain by only a single point. Their previous best event finish was 8th and and 10th-place their best ranking at season’s end.

A heavy loss against Australia stung Brazil in their first match of Day Two, but they rebounded with an historic first-ever victory over the USA in their second match. Thalia Costa scored two tries with Raquel Kochhann’s conversion proving the difference in the 12-10 result. They would end the tournament with an inspired performance in the 5th-place ranking match that saw Great Britain escape by 22-21 thanks to a last-gasp try from Grace Crompton.

Australia proved the best team on show with a comfortable win over Fiji in the Cup Final. Their most difficult opponents during the tournament had been France, who ultimately would claim 3rd place with a blowout win over Russia.

The USA defeated Spain in their penultimate pool match thanks to a first half double from Jaz Gray. Following the disappointment of the Brazil loss, they would then succeed against North American rivals Canada to finish in 7th spot. Naya Tapper scored two tries in the win.

For the new-look Canadians it was a third defeat from three matches on Day Two. They had suffered a heavy defeat to Great Britain and then saw their comeback against Russia fall seven points short.

The Series will stay in Dubai for a second weekend with fans now permitted to attend.
