Tournament Preview – South American 7’s RWC 2022 Qualifying – Costa Rica

The key South American Men’s Rugby event of the year 2021 will take place this Saturday and Sunday in San José, Costa Rica. Nine Latin American countries will compete at the Estadio Nacional de San José for the regional title and for two places at the Rugby World Cup Sevens.

South American countries Brazil, Chile, Peru, Uruguay and Central American republics Guatemala, Panama, El Salvador, Nicaragua and the host country will play on Saturday, November 27 and Sunday, November 28.

The competition is not only the prestigious South American Sevens; it is more than that. The tournament champions and runners-up will qualify for the 2022 Rugby Sevens World Cup in Cape Town, South Africa.

Three fixtures will follow on Day One. They will see 8th vs 9th, 1st vs 4th and 2nd vs 3rd. They are to be part of what is called the challenge and Gold Cup of the tournament. This will also be the format for the first half of Day Two of the competition. The second half of Day Two will be divided into two parts. First, Cup Semi Finals and the finals for 5th and 7th position. Second, the Bronze Final and Final.

The two winning Semi Finalists will qualify for South Africa 2022.
