Brazil the top Women’s side from Americas on Dubai Day One

Opening day at the Dubai Sevens was challenging for the Americas teams in the Women’s bracket. Remarkably it’s Brazil who are the highest ranked of the three, with points differential putting them ahead of the USA in Pool A and Canada’s mark in Pool B.

As Yaras very nearly upset the Olympic Silver medalists in their first game with France needing a late try from captain Jade Ulutule to escape with the win. A convincing victory over Spain followed with four different players scoring tries.

The Eagles were smashed by Australia in their Series return with an Ilona Maher try their only score in a 45-5 blowout. Maher’s double inspired a 24-19 win over France in their second match to even their record heading into Day Two.

Canada first squared off against Olympic Bronze winners Fiji and came up just two points short, Reapi Ulunisau’s conversion on stoppage time proving the difference. A win over Ireland followed, this time a three-from-three kicking performance from Breanne Nicholas securing the 21-17 result.

Each team has two pool matches remaining on Day Two before the placement matchups are set. Brazil will face Australia and the USA, with Canada taking on Great Britain and Russia. The USA open their day against Spain before the showdown with Brazil.

The tournament resumes on Friday night at 9m Pacific time, midnight Eastern. Live broadcasts will be available on the CBC Sports website in Canada, Peacock TV in the USA, ESPN in South America, and on the World Rugby website for those located abroad.
