ATL signs South African duo John-Roy Jenkinson and Justin Basson

Rugby ATL have signed South African forwards John-Roy Jenkinson and Justin Basson for the 2022 Major League Rugby season. Tighthead prop Jenkinson joins from Super Rugby Unlocked side Griquas while second row Basson most recently played for the Stormers in the United Rugby Championship.

Jenkinson, 30, represented South Africa u20 at the 2011 Junior World Championship. He played Currie Cup rugby for the Leopards from that year through 2016 when he moved to the Blue Bulls. A brief stop in Japan with Sanix Blues came prior to his recent one-year stint at Griquas.

Basson broke into senior provincial rugby with the Cheetahs in 2015. The 27-year-old played one season of Super Rugby in 2017 followed by two years in the Guinness Pro 14. He signed for Western Province earlier this year, playing in the Currie Cup before his URC appearance for the Stormers.

The duo bolster a strong South African contingent already in Atlanta. Incumbent tighthead Wikus Groenewald has been playing for Life in the American Rugby Premiership and is expected to stay on, while returning locks Johan Momsen and Marno Redelinghuys are both contracted for 2022.
