The Austin Gilgronis have announced the signing of scrumhalf Ryan Louwrens for the 2022 Major League Rugby season. He arrives from the Kintetsu Liners in Japan but the 30-year-old is best known for his five-year Super Rugby career.
Originally from South Africa, Louwrens moved to Australia as a teenager. After graduating from the Western Force academy to the senior squad, a knee injury suffered in the 2014 preseason delayed his regular season debut until the following year.
Louwrens was a regular in match day squads for the Force from 2015 to 2017 while also playing with the Perth Spirit in the National Rugby Championship. He signed for Kintetsu in 2018 but signed with the Melbourne Rebels in 2020 before returning to Japan at the season’s end.
Known for his muscular physique and combative playing style, Louwrens is the first scrumhalf confirmed by the AG’s for the 2022 campaign. US Eagles starter Ruben de Haas has moved to Saracens while Chile’s Marcelo Torrealba has not been retained. Samoa international Pele Cowley and young American prospect Sidney Shoop were also at the club in 2021.
