Free Jacks lock Jackson Thiebes announces retirement

New England Free Jacks lock Jackson Thiebes has announced his retirement from rugby at the age of 27. The decision to pursue a career outside of the sport comes just days after the club confirmed the arrival of Stan van den Hoven from New Zealand on a two-year deal.

Thiebes enjoyed his best season in 2021, starting all 16 games for the Free Jacks and playing 93% of all possible minutes. His form drew the attention of Eagles selectors who noted an increasingly influential carrying game to go with strong set piece attributes and a high work rate.

A member of the Free Jacks since their inception, Thiebes made the successful return to rugby after playing collegiate football for the Montana Grizzlies. He started all eight of New England’s games during their 2018-19 exhibition campaign and three games in the 2020 MLR season.
