Mario Ledesma to coach Argentina until RWC 2023

On the same day in that Argentina were beaten by Ireland by a record margin, the Pumas head coach confirmed that he will retain his position. Mario Ledesma has confirmed that he will retain his post as Argentina’s head coach. The former test hooker will be the man to take Argentine to Rugby World Cup 2023.

In the post match conference, Ledesma was adamant that he will continue in his post as head coach of Los Pumas. When asked he commented that “it does not seem to be appropriate to talk about this now and less so in a press conference following a test match. In any event, if the management decide something then we’ll see.”

Argentina were 53-7 losers against Ireland. It was easily the biggest Pumas defeat against the men in green. It followed a lackluster performance against France and a win against Italy. In short, Argentina were 1-2 in November with the gap continuing between Argentina and Italy on the one hand and Argentina and Europe’s very best on the other.

Olé notes that the UAR is not thinking about change; Mario Ledesma will remain as head coach of Los Pumas. This means that Argentina will head to the Rugby World Cup with the same coach for consecutive tournaments. The last time that this happened was in the 2003 and 2007 tournaments. Ledesma played in both tournaments under Marcelo Loffreda.

Based on the above the assumption is that the game plan and selections of Ledesma in 2021 are to be carried forward into 2022. As such a similar side is probable to represent Argentina in the three home test matches against Scotland in July 2022.

Argentina’s 2022 will begin at home against Scotland in July. Subsequent fixtures are to be six matches in the Rugby Championship and three tour matches in the UK in November.
