SaberCats sign rising South African prospect Gideon van Wyk

The Houston SaberCats have signed loose forward Gideon van Wyk for the 2022 Major League Rugby season. Arriving from the Cheetahs, the 20-year-old comes highly rated and joins fellow South African back rowers Jaco Bezuidenhout and Willie Britz to Texas.

A star No8 for the renowned Paarl Boys High School, van Wyk’s impressive form earned selection to the South Africa Schools side. He made the jump to the Currie Cup in 2021 and enjoyed a try-scoring senior debut as he got the start against Griquas.

van Wyk joins a new-look SaberCats back row stable that is now six players deep. In addition to Bezuidenhout and Britz, Houston has also added Eagles Sevens star Danny Barrett with Lindenwood standouts Emmanuel Albert and Tinashe Muchena selected in the Collegiate Draft.
