French Barbarians eyeing Eagles matches in July 2022

The French Barbarians are currently in advanced discussions with USA Rugby to play two matches against the Eagles in July of 2022, reports Midi Olympique. Though details are still to be finalised, the matches would be played prior to the USA’s World Cup Qualifiers against Chile with New York and Washington DC the proposed host cities.

Claude Atcher, Director General of the France 2023 bid, is behind the negotiations and says the Barbarians are effectively being employed as ambassadors to help promote the World Cup. Prior to the discussions the USA did not have any matches scheduled to help prepare for the Americas 2 series.

On Saturday the French Barbarians ended a three-year hiatus with a 42-17 win over Tonga in Lyon. They were scheduled to play matches against Canada and the USA last year but the tour was cancelled due to the pandemic. There is no indication yet that the proposed match in Montreal is back on the table.
