ATL trade sends Adriaan Carelse to Dallas

Rugby ATL have traded Adriaan Carelse to the Dallas Jackals in exchange for salary cap considerations. The 26-year-old South African made the move to Major League Rugby from the Cheetahs earlier this year.

Carelse made an immediate impression for the Ratlers with his dynamic attacking ability. He played 10 games for ATL, scoring three tries and kicking six penalty goals. Equally comfortable at flyhalf or fullback, it’s at the former where Carelse will feature for the Jackals with former Worcester fullback Chris Pennell already on the books.

Despite his success during the regular season, Carelse did not feature for ATL in the Conference Final or Championship Final. The return to fitness of fellow South African flyhalf Kurt Coleman ahead of schedule saw the Ratlers forced to make difficult selection decisions in order to respect their match day limit of 10 import players. Coleman is set to return in 2022.

It could be an all-South African halfback combination for Dallas with US-eligible scrumhalf Carlo de Nysschen arriving from San Diego. Dylan James has also signed on from LA. Argentina u20 cap Alejandro Torres is another flyhalf option selected in the Collegiate Draft, while Nate Lyon has been signed on a development contract.
