Canadian flanker Michael Smith has signed a one-year extension with the San Diego Legion that sees him returning for the 2022 Major League Rugby season. The 23-year-old notably earned Rookie of the Year honors for the club in his first season as a professional after joining from the UBC Thunderbirds.
Smith had to wait until Week 6 to make his MLR debut against the LA Giltinis but he made an immediate impression with his high workrate and breakdown prowess. He would make 8 appearances with 4 starts before receiving a call-up for Canada’s senior tour to the UK.
A standout as a No8 at the 2018 World Rugby u20 Trophy, Smith has now made the shift to openside flanker and made his test debut as a replacement against against Wales in July. After making just two appearances since he will start for Canada against Portugal on Saturday.
