Greg McWilliams named Head Coach of Ireland Senior Women

Former US Eagles and Rugby United New York coach Greg McWilliams is to become the new Head Coach of Ireland’s Senior Women’s team. The IRFU have confirmed that current coach Adam Griggs will step down at the end of the November international series to move into an ID and development role, with McWilliams taking the job effective December 1.

It’s the first post for McWilliams since stepping down as Head Coach of New York on the eve of the 2021 Major League Rugby season to help support wife Sarah who was diagnosed with cancer in 2019. The family opted to move back to Ireland having been in the USA since 2014 when McWilliams took a job as Director of Rugby at Yale University.

It’s the second time the 43-year-old has been involved with the Ireland Women. McWilliams was an Assistant Coach with the team at both the 2010 and 2014 World Cups. In 2017 he began to serve as an Assistant Coach for the USA Men’s Eagles and stayed in the role through Rugby World Cup 2019.
