Super Rugby scrumhalf Dillon Smit signs for Houston

The Houston SaberCats have announced the signing of scrumhalf Dillon Smit for the 2022 Major League Rugby season. Arriving from the Johannesburg-based Lions outfit in South Africa, the 28-year-old brings six years of Super Rugby experience to AVEVA Stadium.

Smit’s professional career began with the Border Bulldogs in 2013. He would play the next two seasons with the Leopards before making his Super Rugby debut with the Lions in 2015. Since then he has played more than 50 senior games for the side including Currie Cup appearances.

Nick Boyer took over as first choice scrumhalf for the SaberCats in 2021 after a preseason injury saw incumbent captain De Wet Roos miss the entire season. The latter is not expected to return in 2022 though Boyer will be staying on in Houston.
