Carcassonne have signed Ignacio Calas as a medical joker. The French club will be the second foriegn-club and country in which the Argentine second-rower has played professional rugby abroad. Calas previously played in Super Rugby AU for the Melbourne Rebels.
The move will be a first for Calas; he will play in Europe for the first time. He previously played for Los Jaguares in non-Super Rugby matches and featured in Super Rugby AU this past season for the Rebels.
The 25-year-old will be the only Argentine on the Carcassonne roster. He played alongside Puma Lucio Sordoni at the Melbourne Rebels.
Calas was on the Argentine roster for the 2020 Tri Nations. He did not receive game time and remains uncapped by his country. His move to Super Rugby AU was part of Los Jaguares’ 2020 players exodus. He and other second-rowers departed Argentina to continue their careers abroad. Matías Alemanno now plays for Gloucester, Marcos Kremer for Stade Français, Lucas Paulos plays for Brive, and Guido Petti plays for Bordeaux.
Calás is a product of Club La Tablada. The Córdoba club also produced Matías Alemanno and Los Pumas 7’s Tokyo Olympian Bronze Medalist Gastón Revol. In addition, former Italian RWC players Gonzalo Canale, Pablo Canavosio, Diego Domínguez, and Ramiro Pez were all La Tablada players.
