Houston reels in former Sunwolves captain Willie Britz

The Houston SaberCats have signed Super Rugby veteran Willie Britz for the 2022 Major League Rugby season. Originally from South Africa, the 33-year-old loose forward has spent the past six years playing professionally in Japan and notably captained the Sunwolves during their final season in 2018.

Britz made his Vodacom Cup debut at the age of 20 for the Free State Cheetahs. He graduated to the senior Currie Cup in 2012 with the Golden Lions and after returning to the Cheetahs made the jump to Super Rugby in 2014. A move to Japan came in 2015 with the NTT Shining Arcs, and he joined the Sunwolves in 2017.

The SaberCats now have four new back rowers signed up for 2022 including Eagles Sevens star Danny Barrett and Collegiate Draft picks Emmanuel Albert and Tinashe Muchena. Diego Magno and Bronson Teles have departed and it remains unclear if incumbent captain Luke Beauchamp, openside flanker Cecil Garber, or No8 Adriaan Booysen will return next season.
