World Sevens Series returns with Spain to make hosting debut

A full-length World Sevens Series will return in November with ten men’s and seven women’s tournaments scheduled through May 2022. Most notable is the hosting debut of Spain, who welcome back-to-back tournaments in January to Málaga and Seville.

As previously announced Dubai will also host events on successive weekends to start the 2022 season. Unable to host this year are Cape Town, Sydney, and Hamilton, though it is intended they will return in future editions once pandemic restrictions allow.

Six events will feature both Men’s and Women’s brackets with four hosting Men only and one for Women only. Toulouse, another new venue, will serve as the final event of the season for the Women while the Men complete their circuit a week later at Twickenham.

A full compliment of core teams are expected though unusually Great Britain will compete at the Dubai events before breaking up into individual England, Scotland, and Wales sides. Americas entries among the Men’s core teams include Argentina, Canada, and the USA. The Women’s entries vary only in South America where Brazil are the region’s representative.

Two further events will take place at the end of the 2022 World Series. The Commonwealth Games will be hosted in Birmingham, England, from July 29-31. Cape Town will then host the Rugby World Cup Sevens from September 9-11.
