SaberCats sign Eagles duo Matai Leuta and Danny Barrett

The Houston SaberCats have announced the double-signing of Eagles pair Matai Leuta and Danny Barrett. Both are dual internationals having won caps for the USA in both sevens and fifteens, and recently competed at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Leuta, 31, has played in 40 World Sevens Series events since debuting at Hong Kong in 2015. He started all three matches for the USA Select XV during the 2016 Americas Pacific Challenge and then started tests against Georgia and Canada in 2017. Though his representative appearances have been on the wing, Leuta’s size suggests he could also be used in the midfield.

Barrett is more experienced in test rugby having won 13 caps and competing at the 2015 World Cup in England. Also 31, he is primarily a ball-carrying No8 but has played across the back row. With 54 Sevens Series tournaments under his belt he is one of the USA’s most experienced international competitors.

The two signings are expected to make immediate impacts in their new surroundings. New Director of Rugby Heyneke Meyer is looking to add firepower to the new-look SaberCats, with the club sporting the lowest offensive output in Major League Rugby last season..
