Robbie Petzer has bid farewell to Rugby ATL and Major League Rugby. The 25-year-old flyhalf or center has signed a two-year deal with the Pumas to compete in South Africa’s Currie Cup. He leaves ATL after just one season of a long-term deal signed earlier in 2021.
A standout in his two seasons with the Glendale Raptors, Petzer landed with the Dallas Jackals after a proposed move to Japanese club Tokyo Gas fell through. When Dallas pulled out of the 2021 MLR season Petzer joined ATL. Of his 16 appearances this season he started 10 and kicked 43 points.
While the Pumas are not one of the four South African sides entered in the new United Rugby Championship, their top players are being eyed for potential loan agreements. Four such players recently joined the Lions and Petzer could be eyed to take up a similar contract as the season progresses.
