Americas Rankings – October 03, 2021

The Americas Rankings is an exclusive on Americas Rugby News. The rankings compare the men’s test teams from throughout the Americas. Matches recognized as caps are used for the rankings. Teams yet to compete since the Americas Rankings began are listed with 30.00 points.

It was a busy Saturday for the Americas Rankings. Argentina was the home side against Australia for a Rugby Championship match in Australia while Canada hosted Chile and the USA hosted Uruguay in RWC 2023 qualifiers.

Argentina were beaten 32-17 by Australia. The margin was by 15 points which corresponds to an exchange of 0.836 points. The updated rankings see Argentina falling further in the World Rankings and narrowly avoid dropping below Wales. Without wins in the November Internationals Argentina will be 9th at best.

Canada’s last second 22-21 win over Chile corresponds to a 0.012 points exchange. Canada thereby increase very slightly and Chile fall very slightly. Had Chile held on to win the match then it would have been a 1.988 exchange. The rematch next weekend in Valparaiso, Chile will have further implications for the rankings.

The USA defeated Uruguay 19-16 at home in the other RWC qualifier. Of note is that the USA had held a commanding 19-3 lead. Uruguay’s fight back gives them a good outcome in terms of the RWC qualifiers. Like Chile against Canada, Uruguay have a realistic platform to target an upset victory. In terms of rankings, the USA gained 0.685 points and Uruguay lost that amount.

The updated Americans Rankings see the USA moving to a lead of just over 1.50 rankings points. This could change in Montevideo next weekend. More importantly, the winner of the two-match series, on aggregate, will qualify for RWC 2023 as Americas 1.

The rankings will be updated again following next weekend’s international competition. Chile host Canada and Uruguay host the USA.
