BC Rugby hires John Tait as Technical Director

BC Rugby has announced the hiring of John Tait as their new Technical Director. It’s the first rugby post for the 48-year-old since his controversial departure from Rugby Canada earlier this year.

Tait was forced to resign as Head Coach of Canada’s Senior Women’s Sevens side after a complaint with the names of 37 past and present players attached was submitted to Rugby Canada. An independent investigation absolved Tait of wrongdoing but all parties concluded his position was untenable.

In a statement provided in a media release BC Rugby CEO Annabel Kehoe says they are comfortable with the findings of the report, which to date Rugby Canada has opted not to make public.

“I appreciate some people may be concerned with this appointment, but the interview process directly addressed the Rugby Canada report, and we’re confident John is the right person for this position and will bring his learnings from the last year to better our programs.

“We look forward to John joining the team and together we are fully committed to continuous learning to ensure what we do represents best practice.”

The release also says that BC Rugby is “committed to providing an organisation, community and environment that is welcoming, safe, supportive and that protects the physical and mental well-being of all individuals.” It notes that Respect in Sport training will be completed by all staff by the end of October.
