Germany stuns Great Britain, USA unbeaten in Edmonton

Germany produced the upset of the tournament with a stunning 19-10 win over Great Britain on the opening day of the Edmonton Sevens. South Africa continue to set the pace while the USA enjoyed an unbeaten start with three wins to top Pool B.

The physicality of Damian McGrath’s Wolfpack was on full display as Anjo Buckman slipped through a tackle to score, with the final tally reading 19-10 in favor of the Germans. Great Britain remain in Cup contention but will have to square off against an in-form USA side in the Quarter Final.

Captain Kevon Williams produced a hat-trick against Spain to start things off for the Eagles and they would wrap up the day with a hard-fought victory over Kenya. Chile were the team to fall in the middle, the young Cóndores failing to find much success for a second straight week.

Canada got off to a strong start against Hong Kong and cruised against Mexico with three tries from debutante Thomas Isherwood. The Blitzboks are a class apart, however, with a triple from Muller du Plessis highlighting a one-sided thrashing of their hosts. Mexico’s day got worse as the day continued with a horrifying 70-nil bashing at the hands of Hong Kong.

In the Women’s Fast Four, three tries from Summer Harris-Jones weren’t enough as the USA settled for a 26-all draw against Canada, who got a double from Renee Gonzalez. It was another tie against Great Britain for the home side, while the Eagles saw Jasmine Joyce race away for two scores to slip into third spot. The North Americans will rematch in the Semi Finals.
