South Africa claim dominant Vancouver 7s title

South Africa cruised to a dominant Cup Final victory at the World Sevens Series event in Vancouver on Sunday. The 38-5 win over Kenya capped an unbeaten run through the tournament with the Blitzboks running up a points total of 238 for and only 43 against.

The USA were the best of the five Americas teams in the competition, defeating Canada in the 5th Place Final. It was the second time the two North American rivals met in the tournament, with the Eagles claiming both results in convincing fashion.

Canada took two victories in the pool stage while the USA were unbeaten, but both slipped up in the Quarter Finals. Two second half tries gave Kenya the win over the Eagles while Great Britain outclassed their far less experienced hosts.

Jamaica’s 10-5 win over Chile – the only win of the tournament for the Crocs – was enough to see them to a 10th overall finish, with Los Cóndores forced to accept 11th place. Late additions Mexico were unsurprisingly well beaten in each of their five games.

Meanwhile Great Britain claimed the Women’s ‘Fast Four’ tournament with relative ease. The USA were runners-up after beating Canada in the Semi Final, with the hosts having no trouble defeating Mexico to finish in 3rd spot.

Next weekend’s tournament in Edmonton will feature the same teams and format. It will also act as a conclusion for the severely truncated 2021 circuit, with the following events in Dubai to act as the first stops in the 2022 campaign.
