International Match Preview – Uruguay vs Argentina XV

Uruguay play host to the Argentina XV on Sunday. The match is the second of two between the teams so far this year. As was the case before game one, this Sunday’s match serves as preparation for Uruguay’s RWC 2023 qualifiers. Uruguay face the USA in home-and-away matches in October. The winner, on aggregate, will qualify for France 2023 as Americas 1.

Sunday’s match will be played at the Estadio Charrúa. The venue is the home of Uruguayan rugby. It is one of the top facilities in the Americas with a High Performance Center and artificial turf. The venue seats 14,000 and has had lively crowds in the past. The decisive home game vs Canada in the RWC 2019 qualifiers is a case in point.

Uruguay are up against a rare wounded Argentina XV. The Argentina XV are on a losing streak. The Argentine next-of-XV was beaten 24-26 by Uruguay in July and 25-24 by Chile this past Wednesday.

Uruguay go in to the match with 23 players who are in the frame for international duty in the RWC qualifiers. That said, the team is different to what the test side will be that faces the USA Eagles next month.

There will be some familiar names to the Eagles. NOLA Gold’s Ignacio Dotti starts in the second-row and former Austin players Juan Echeverría and Rodrigo Silva start at loose head and fullback respectively. The Texan connection does not end there as former Houston SaberCat, Diego Magno will cover from the bench. In addition, the Toronto Arrows will be represented with Manuel Diana playing at the back of the scrum and Gastón Mieres on the left wing.

The Argentina XV is a hybrid team. That is to say that it contains players who are established in the system as well as others who may be regulars in years to come. There are players from not just Los Jaguares XV but also from the Olímpia Lions and Peñarol.

Tomás Cubilla is the captain of the Argentina XV. He has played both wing and center in the Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR). Few names are more established than him. One exception is that of Bautista Pedemonte. The N8 made his Super Rugby debut for Los Jaguares in 2020 before the season was prematurely suspended.
